Upon awakening, the white haze slowly dissipates as my dreams transform into memories. But what occurs when fragments of the dream materialise, pulled into tangibility, drawn into reality? Colours begin to intensify, and lines become more defined.” This process is highly similar to Mariko’s design process. Initially, her designs start as vague and unclear ideas, comparable with the white haze in her dreams. However, through visualisation, her designs gain clarity and definition. In this installation, she demonstrated how this process unfolds by visualising one of her dreams and crafting the white haze. From the exterior, you can observe the white haze enveloping the dream, with muted colours. However, as you step into the space, the true nature of the installation becomes more apparent. As a part of the installation there is an audio. However, the body is a complex and multifaceted organism, with a wide range of shapes, forms, and movements that can be appreciated in many different ways. One of the most striking aspects of the body is its curves. While many people may see them as signs of attractiveness, they can also be appreciated as abstract shapes that have their own inherent beauty. From the graceful sweep of a woman's hip to the natural folds and creases that form with movement, the body is full of both subtle and intriguing details. Each curve tells a unique tale, a testament to the diversity and individuality that make us who we are. Those abstract shapes are brought together in an installation piece made with ceramics to show every detail and every fold. All folds are naturally created by the body. No movement is the same, and therefore no cast is the same. When she was younger Mariko and her brother who has Down Syndome, used to play with building blocks. This is a memory that directly came up in her head when she was thinking about the theme ‘Keep playing’. With the plaster blocks Mariko hopes to capture the memory of her childhood and translate them in to now. Together with a young talented carpenter, they were assigned to drastically redesign and rebuild one of their best-selling chairs into a more appealing design. When taking the chair apart they found out that the construct of the chair was different than initially expected. This inspired them to create a model that is more transparent and shows what is below the surface. By installing the classical armrests They created a controversial contrast with the modern plastic fabric. What elements will leave them spellbound and create an unforgettable experience? In this creative endeavor, Mariko sets out to prepare an extraordinary meal for an individual she holds in high regard. Drawing inspiration from 'Memoirs of a Geisha,' she chose to dedicate this meal to the Geisha depicted in the novel, a character whose strength and influence left a profound impact on her. It was Mariko's honor to design a dinner that pays homage to such a powerful presence. But how do you create a special dinner for someone who enjoys amazing Japanese meals daily? Mariko aimed higher and more extravagant! She crafted 101 bowls, each a piece of an extraordinary dinner experience she hopes her Geisha will always remember. You might ask, why 101? It's inspired by the symbolic number 1001, important in various cultures. However, 1001 bowls would mean too many dishes and wouldn't fit on a table. Tulips tend to continue to grow in the vase even after being cut at the farmer. The sloping form of the vase allows the tulips to grow and gives maximum ability to expand its volume. Mariko first got inspired by recycling thes bracelets when visiting the DDW 2018. Although the bracelets were already made out of recycle plastic bottles She was shocked that again this turned into waste after the event. Mariko decided that these materials deserved a third life which was not intended for single use and would even contribute to limiting the use of plastic bags.
